Every January, afterschool leaders and staff open blank calendars, crack open new notebooks, and start thinking about how to set their programs up for a strong new semester. It is a moment filled with both possibility and pressure, because afterschool is heart, hustle, and a whole lot of improvisation.
It runs on your ability to take whatever the day brings and still create the kind of experiences students call the best part of their afternoon.
But here is the truth about a new year: You don’t need a total reboot. You don’t need 26 color-coded goals. You don’t need a brand new plan on day one.
What afterschool programs really need in 2026 is a return to what actually matters. The things that make staff feel confident. The things that help students feel connected. The things that bring joy back into each afternoon.
So at AB Studios, we are launching a year-long series built around one simple idea:
One word each month. One intention. One small shift that brings you back to what matters most.
For January, that word is Reset.
Here is what that can look like in your program.
Resetting does not mean changing everything. It means choosing intentional, manageable shifts that help leaders and staff feel more aligned, supported, and equipped. When staff feel confident, students feel it in the way they explore, create, and connect.
Below are ten simple resets that bring more clarity, calm, and joy into the start of the year.
1. Set a Clear, “Let’s Make This Easier” Focus for Staff
Instead of adding new expectations, choose one thing staff can stop doing and one small habit they can lean into. This brings clarity and lowers stress for everyone.
2. Begin the Week With a Program Pulse Instead of a Meeting
A three-minute standing check-in that names the week’s theme, one activity anchor, and one important heads-up gives staff the clarity they need without draining time or energy.
3. Build a Top Drawer Kit That Works for Any Activity
A small bin with high-leverage materials such as tape, cups, foil, and index cards becomes a creativity engine that supports dozens of STEM, art, and storytelling activities.
4. Focus on One Facilitation Move All Month
Choose one technique, such as narrating what you notice or asking open questions, and practice it consistently. Mastery grows when practice is focused and manageable.
5. Give the Month a Theme That Guides Decisions
Naming January as your Reset Month helps staff filter choices more easily and worry less about perfection. A shared theme brings cohesion across sites and teams.
6. Shine a Light on Staff Moments
Once a week, highlight one small but meaningful staff action that made a difference. Celebrating these sparks builds confidence and strengthens collective identity.
7. Make Arrival Meaningful With a Quick Belonging Check-In
Add a fast, predictable question during sign-in. Consistent micro-rituals help students feel seen, grounded, and ready to transition into enrichment.
8. Refresh One High-Use Area of Your Space
Choose the table, shelf, supplies area, or project wall that kids interact with most and give it a simple reset. When environments shift, energy and engagement shift too.
9. Build a Two-Activity Toolkit You Can Rely On
Pick two low prep activities that can be scaled up or down for any age group, so staff never scramble when plans change, or groups shift.
10. End Each Day With a Creative Spark
A one-minute ritual, such as a quick build challenge or story prompt, adds joyful predictability and ends each day on a high note.
These resets do not need to be perfect. They simply create more breathing room for staff and more structure for students. Resetting allows leaders and staff to slow down, regroup, and realign around what matters most.
January’s theme of Reset is your invitation to release what is heavy and center what is meaningful. Confident staff. Engaged learners. Spaces that feel joyful to run.
And this is only the beginning. Throughout 2026, AB Studios will share monthly themes that help afterschool leaders reconnect with the heart of their work, from empowerment and belonging to creativity, consistency, and celebration.
When programs make space for what matters, afterschool becomes a place where students and staff thrive.
